Fish on Friday?

Happy Sunny Friday !

I hope to bring some inspiration to your home practice this week with some ideas about why we do this beautifully elegant heart opening Fish posture in our sessions.

The Sanskrit name is Matsyasana, it is one of the foundational poses of Hatha yoga and although it looks gentle, it involves some of the major muscles such as those in the shoulders, back, chest, core, neck, arms and pelvis.

Benefits include:

  • Opening the chest and heart chakra and strengthens the muscles in the thoracic spine and ribcage
  • Relieving mild back discomfort
  • Supporting a healthy digestive system and aiding to correct tummy issues such as constipation
  • Lengthening the hip flexor muscles and iliopsoas muscles
  • Toning our tummies – who does not want that?!
  • Opening out the upper back and thus helping our posture and preventing kyphosis ( rounded shoulders and upper back)
  • Eases respiratory tensions
  • Brings a sense of calm to the nervous system through the breathing prompted in this posture, so reducing symptoms of anxiety and depression
  • Invigorates us when we are tired

Maybe this will encourage you to expand your fish on Friday inspiration – strike a pose today! 😊

Wishing you all a great weekend

Love and light
